We all know that conveyor belts serve as the medium for transporting materials in belt conveyors and are one of the system’s key components. However, a common problem that frequently arises during operation is tearing. Tearing can be considered a fatal flaw for conveyor belts; once a belt tears, the system must be shut down for replacement, resulting in a significant waste of time. Therefore, we must take the issue of tearing seriously. Below, we will outline several causes of tearing to help you stay vigilant.
1. Sharp objects in the conveyed material can easily scratch the conveyor belt. If the scratches are deep enough, tearing is likely to occur during material transport—especially when handling heavy loads.
2. Belt misalignment. If the conveyor belt becomes misaligned, it will cause uneven stress distribution—with some areas bearing greater stress than others. Under these conditions, the areas under greater stress are highly prone to tearing.
3. Belt jamming can also easily cause tears. When a large amount of material falls into the chute, it can jam the conveyor belt, preventing it from operating normally. However, since the motor continues to run, the belt is highly susceptible to tearing.
4. Conveyor belts are typically made of rubber and are therefore prone to aging. Transporting high-temperature or corrosive materials accelerates this aging process. Once the belt has aged, it is highly susceptible to tearing.
5. Dumping material directly from a height is a highly unreasonable design choice. The significant drop height subjects the conveyor belt to severe impact. If the material contains sharp objects, they can easily sever the belt’s inner core, making the belt highly susceptible to tearing.
